  2. What is NECAP? • Criterion-referenced standardized test • State-mandated assessment of core content • Reading • Mathematics • Writing (Grades 5, 8, and 11) • Administered to all students • Grades 3-8 • Grade 11 (reported separately)

  3. Types of Scores Reported on NECAP • Achievement Levels • Use to make comparisons about achievement of standards • Reported in percent of n • Four proficiency levels • Scaled scores • Use to make comparisons among students, schools, and districts • 3-digit number • 40 is the proficient cut score Example: 340 Grade Level Scaled Score

  4. Reading Results District-wide (Achievement Levels): • 40% of students scored proficient or higher as compared to 37% in 2006. • 29% of students scored substantially below proficient in reading in 2007, the same as in 2006. • A trend demonstrating an increase in percent proficient across a three-year period has emerged.

  5. Reading Results Grade-level (Achievement Levels): • Percent proficient ranged from 36% (gr. 6) to 43% (gr. 5) • Percent substantially below proficient ranged from 22% (gr. 5) to 31% (gr. 4, 8) • Grades 5, 7 & 8: • Trend - more students proficient • Trend - fewer students substantially below proficient Grade 3-5 Grade 6-8

  6. Reading Results Scaled Scores: • No grade displays a mean scaled score that attains Proficient (i.e., 40). • Grades 5, 7, and 8: • continuous gain in mean scaled sore across three years. Grade 3-5 Grade 6-8

  7. Writing Results District-wide (Achievement Levels): • 28% of students scored proficientorhigher as compared with 24% in 2006 • 34% of students scored substantially below proficient as compared with 42% in 2006 • Data is inconsistent for the district; trends do not emerge

  8. Writing Results Grade-level (Achievement Levels): • Percent proficient ranged from 20% (gr. 8) to 36% (gr. 5) • Percent substantially below proficient ranged from 31% (gr. 5) to 37% (gr. 8) • Trends do not emerge

  9. Writing Results Scaled Scores: • No grade displays a mean scaled score that attains Proficient (i.e., 40). • Grade 8: • Trend - continuous one-point gains in mean scaled sore across three years.

  10. Math Results District-wide (Achievement Levels): • 28% of students scored proficientorhigher as compared with 31% in 2006 • 44% of students scored substantially below proficient as compared with 43% in 2006 • Data is inconsistent for the district; trends do not emerge

  11. Math Results Grade Level (Achievement Levels): • Percent proficient ranged from 25% (gr. 8) to 34% (gr. 5) • Percent substantially below proficient ranged from 40% (gr. 3) to 48% (gr. 8). • 2 of 6 grade levels demonstrate some degree of decline in the percent of students substantially below proficient from 2006 to 2007 – grades 7 and 8. Grade 3-5 Grade 6-8

  12. Math Results Scaled Scores: • No grade displays a mean scaled score that attains Proficient (i.e., 40). • 34% of students scored substantially below proficient as compared with 42% in 2006 • Data is inconsistent for most grade levels; however, Grade 8 data reflects a positive trend in mean scaled sore Grade 3-5 Grade 6-8
