FY04 Issues & Goals • The issues we needed to address in FY04 continued to be issues of awareness, recruitment and workplace environment. • Our goals to address these issues were: To raise awareness among GS staff of the many topics making up the concept of diversity in the workplace. To partner with Work Force Diversity Office, Human Resources Department, the Best Practices Diversity Council and other interested Divisions to promote a comprehensive plan for Strategic Recruiting. To improve the workplace environment for all members of the GS community, including matrixed staff.
FY04 Accomplishments • Many GS staff involved in education + outreach individualy. Activities to be posted our web page. • Southern Univ. (HBCU) Prof. Ali Fazely + undergrad Leslie Sanford with Prof. Bob Jacobsen (UCB/LBNL) and Dr. Peggy McMahan (NSD) at 88" cyclotron. • Undergrad Tannus Joubert with Dr. Spencer Klein (NSD) on IceCube. Won 3rd place for poster on IceCube at 2004 Lousiana Alliance for Minority Participation conference. • Prof. Sekazi Mtingwa (Harvard) at AFRD, summer 2004 on Linear Collider project with Dr. Andy Wolski of CBP, Theory Group. • Pilot Plan for strategic recruiting was proposed by Gerry Abrams. • Implemented in Phys. Div. for the Chamberlain Fellowship search and presented to AFRD, NSD. • Adopted as recommendation by lab Diversity Best Practice Council. • Brown bag held to discuss roles and responsibilities for supervisors.
FY04 Accomplishments (Cont.) • GSWC presented to the GS Directors a list of performance expectations for supervisors. • Many were found to be already covered in current performance reviews. • AFRD distributed the “Supervisor Expectations” to program heads and supervisors as resource document. • The GSWC held postdoc career planning workshop • "Careers for Physicists in Biotechnology: One Woman’s Experience," Dr. Maria Isaac (former UCB, NSD postdoc), of Optiscan BioMedical, discussed her experiences in biotech industry. • New rules for NSD postdoc re-appointments to promote career development were adopted
FY04 Accomplishments (Cont.) • Mentoring of post docs & new NSD staff studied. • Would mentoring benefit under-represented groups? • This was found not to be the case at present • Revisit when more under-represented are hired. • GS all-hands diversity awareness meeting held on May 10, 2004. • Web page development for the GSWC planned to promote diversity awareness. • The AFRD Director is member of APS Committee on Minorities. (includes mentor relation with three minority scholarship awardees) • Chair-elect of APS Forum on Education, Peggy McMahan (NSD) is very active on the national scene.

Education and Public Outreach (EPO) • Develop a GS Workplace Committee web page • Resources were allocated • Networking with college faculty and high school teachers • High school students • Summer programs (undergraduate and graduate level) • Attend Conferences and workshops • NSBP (National Society for Black Physicists) and NSHP (National Society for Hispanic Physicists) • 2006 Joint Annual Conference of the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP), February 15 - 18, 2006, San Jose, CA • The National Black Student Conference • at LBNL in 2006 ! • SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science) • Next national conference: Science for America's Future, Denver, CO, September 29-October 2, 2005
Scientific and Technical Staff Pipeline • Continueto work with CSEE to place women and minority students for internship to pursue scientific research careers. • High school students • Undergraduate students • Continue to partner with faculties in Minority Serving Institutions • Collaborate with the Work Force Diversity Office and the Best Practices Council to facilitate these efforts.
Strategic Recruiting • Develop policies and procedures for improved strategic recruiting, using "Living Lists" of qualified individuals who are potential candidates for future open positions in the general sciences. • Revise hiring procedures to ensure that positions are advertised to as many under-represented candidates as possible. • NSD has adopted new hiring procedures to enhance strategic recruiting, using the living list concept • Physics and AFRD are in the process of formulating revised procedures
Workforce Development • Organize quarterly Brown Bag Lunch Meetings on topics like • leadership and supervisory growth • career planning • diversity • immigration issues • First Brown Bag Lunch: October 17thTitle: Immigration and Foreign Workers’ Issues • Second Brown Bag Lunch: preliminary planned for January 2006Title: Students and Visitors at GS:--Rules, Funding, Fellowship, Time lines • Initiate a dialog with HR, on how to conduct a survey on the “Workplace Climate” of the GS workforce.
Communication/Awareness • Hold a General Sciences all-hands diversity awareness meeting with emphasis on the diversity issues in strategic recruiting. • expect to occur in October 2005 • Maintain a web-site for the General Sciences Workplace Committee to communicate with employees. • Organize a session at the American Physical Society April meeting for entry-level minority scientists.
