THE COVENANTS God’s Covenant to Adam • God’s promise to redeem mankind from the curse caused by Adam and Eve’s disobedience. God says to the serpent [representing Satan], “You and this woman will hate each other; your descendants and hers will always be enemies. One of hers will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel.” Genesis 3:15 CEV
Jesus Christ fulfills the prophecy and pays the penalty for our sin. • In the movie, The Passion of the Christ, a snake bits the heal of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane and Jesus crushes its head. • “He suffered and endured great pain for us, but we thought his suffering was punishment from God. He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our punishment, he made us completely well. All of us were like sheep that had wandered off. We had each gone our own way, but the Lord gave him the punishment we deserved.” Isaiah 53:4-6 CEV • “But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.” Romans 5:8 CEV
God’s Covenant to Noah: • God promises Noah to never flood the earth to destroy mankind again and gives Noah the rainbow in the sky as a sign of this covenant. • God says, “I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood...When I see the rainbow in the sky, I will always remember the promise that I have made to every living creature. The rainbow will be the sign of that solemn promise.” Genesis 9:11,16-17 CEV
God’s Covenant to Abraham: • God promises Abram [Abraham] that Abram’s descendents will have land to call their own, descendents beyond imagination, and that he would be blessed and become a blessing to all the nations of the earth. • “The Lord said to Abram: Leave your country, your family, and your relatives and go to the land that I will show you. I will bless you and make your descendants into a great nation. You will become famous and be a blessing to others. I will bless anyone who blesses you, but I will put a curse on anyone who puts a curse on you. Everyone on earth will be blessed because of you.” Genesis 12:1-3 CEV
God’s Covenant to Moses: • God promises Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt and to give them the land He promised to Abraham • “Here is my message for Israel: ‘I am the Lord! And with my mighty power I will punish the Egyptians and free you from slavery. I will accept you as my people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I was the one who rescued you from the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I solemnly promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and it will by yours. I am Lord!’” Exodus 6:6-8 CEV
Today’s Session God’s Covenant with David: • God promises King David an eternal kingdom and throne from his descendants, and that the city of Jerusalem and the eternal throne of David are forever linked together. • God says, “…Now I promise that you and your descendants will be kings…I will make sure that one of your descendants will always be king.” 2 Samuel 7:11,16 CEV • “I, the Lord All-Powerful, will see to it that some who live in Jerusalem will survive…I will protect it for myself and for my servant David.” 2 Kings 19:31,34 CEV
The Davidic Covenant has two parts • The descendants of King David to reign forever, i.e. there will be a descendant of king David on an eternal throne. This is ultimately fulfilled by Jesus Christ. • 2. Jerusalem is confirmed as god’s chosen city with a temple to be on Mount Zion, i.e. God will reign from Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Through the Davidic Covenant from God to King David, the Israelites finally move from being a nomadic tribe to a true kingdom. The city of Jerusalem is established as the center of the kingdom and a permanent temple is finally to be built on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
The Immanuel Principle • At the heart of the Davidic Covenant is the Immanuel Principle. Immanuel means “God with us.” • One of the many names for Jesus Christ is Immanuel or Emmanuel. Isaiah 7:14; and also Matthew 1:23 which says, “A virgin will have a baby boy, and he will be called Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” • Isaiah and the other prophets foretold quite clearly of a child to be born who would sit on the throne of David and who shall be called “mighty God.” Isaiah 9:6 CEV
Through the Davidic line God will maintain a permanent kingship Jesus Christ becomes the consummation, the ultimate fulfillment of this covenant/promise. • Jesus Christ is a son of David, i.e. through the lineage of David. “Jesus Christ came from the family of King David and also from the family of Abraham…” Matthew 1:1 CEV • Jesus Christ is the son of God. “This good news is about his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ! As a human, he was from the family of David. But the Holy Spirit proved that Jesus is the powerful Son of God, because he was raised from death.” Romans 1:3-4 CEV
Jerusalem The second part of this Davidic Covenant concerns the eternal state of the city of Jerusalem. • The history of the city of Jerusalem is fascinating as the focal point of all the world and the key city of the three major world religions (Judaism, Islam, & Christianity) that proclaim one God. Jerusalem is God’s chosen city. • Biblical prophecy proclaims that God in Christ will again reign from the city of Jerusalem and that at the second return of Christ, He will stand on Mount Zion and reclaim the city for His glory. Revelations 14:1
The covenants of God to the nation of Israel in the Old Testament clearly emphasizes the wholeness of history from Abraham through Moses to David. God uniquely chose Abraham & his descendents and God is not done with the nation of Israel. Every nation on earth is affected by God’s promise to Abraham and the nation of Israel. Both the lineage of David and the city of Jerusalem interrelate with the lordship of God himself. God will fulfill his every promise for both the throne of David and the city of Jerusalem through his Son, Jesus Christ. The End In Conclusion
