Comparing Sounds – Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese Korean • Poetic • Example: • 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo) • 안녕(annyeong) Mandarin Chinese • Shrill • Example: • 你好 (Nǐhǎo) • 再見 (Zàijiàn)
Comparing Sounds – Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese Cont’d Vietnamese • Nasally • Choppy • Example: • Chào Japanese • Elegant • Polysyllabic • Example: • 今日は (Kyōwa) • さようなら (Sayōnara)
Why is so Difficult to differentiate Chinese Korean • There are 11 dialects in South Korea alone • 2 main regions that the dialects are in: • Northwestern • Central • There are roughly 7 dialects in China • The 2 that are most used is: • Putonghua (Mandarin) • Yue (Cantonese)
Why is so Difficult to differentiate cont’d Japanese Vietnamese • Split into northern, central, and southern regions • Different enunciation • Relatively difficult to understand Central Vietnam • Split into eastern and western regions • There are over 100 dialects • Pitch
