  1. Milestone 6 Report Black Sea GIG

  2. Background information Common type: shallow waters, mixed substratum, mesohaline. Countries involved: Romania and Bulgaria. Biological quality elements: • Romania: Phytoplankton – total density, total biomass, ratio between species - dynophlagelatae/diatomeae; Bentic Invertebrates – Species composition, total biomass. • Bulgaria: Phytoplankton – chl.”a”, total density, total biomass, ratio between species - dynophlagelatae/diatomeae; Bentic Invertebrates – Species composition, total biomass. Chemical parameters: temperature, salinity, O2, oxygen saturability, BOD5, P-PO4, Ptotal, N-NH4, N-NO3, N-NO2, Ntotal.

  3. IC approach • Option 1 – Phytoplankton - Macrozoobentos

  4. Data • New data has been collected from all sites during 2005. • Phytoplankton - total density, total biomass, ratio between species - dynophlagelatae/diatomeae; • Bentic Invertebrates – Species composition, total biomass. BSP not applied yet. Common data is under study.

  5. National classification methods

  6. Setting of Reference conditions • The reference conditions were preliminary set, at national level, based on historical data and expert judgement. Bulgaria: • Phytoplankton: chl ”a”, total biomass, number of species, no. of phytoplankton blooms/year, diversity index H’ – Shannon; • Macrozoobentos: diversity index H’ – Shannon; • Macrofites: relative coverage of marine macrofites; Romania: • Phytoplankton: total density, total biomass, ratio between species; • Macrozoobentos: diversity index H’ – Shannon, total density;

  7. Reference conditions Bulgaria

  8. Reference conditions Romania

  9. Boundaries • EQR’s at national level: Bulgaria: Phytoplankton - Diversity index H' - Shannon Biomass Number of species No. of phytoplankton blooms/year Chl. “a” concentration Macrozoobentos - Diversity index H' - Shannon

  10. Boundaries • EQR’s at national level: Romania: Phytoplankton – no. of species; - no. of phytoplankton blooms/year; Macrozoobentos - Diversity index H' – Shannon; - total density;

  11. Workplan • Future samplings: 03 – 07.07.2006 • Future meetings: late September or October 2006 • Future activities: Bulgaria on-going project

  12. What can be achieved • October 2006 Comparison of the methods of sampling and analyzing of data between Bulgaria and Romania. • June 2007 Upgrade of established reference conditions. Intercalibration of the methods for assessment of the data. Finalization of the Intercalibration exercise.

  13. Problems • Although both countries are using the same methods, there are some differences regarding the analyzing equipment; • Financial problems – delay in sampling and difficulties in participating at meetings – delay in observation of the existing differences;
