  2. Urinary System – filters waste and extra fluid from the blood in the form of urine - Composed of four parts

  3. Part 1 • Kidneys • Two bean shaped organs about the size of a fist • Contain nephrons, which are tiny filtering units • Monitors and adjusts amount of salts and water in blood

  4. Part 2 • Ureters • Two tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder • Each is about 8 to 10 inches long

  5. Part 3 • Bladder • Hollow, muscular organ located in the pelvic cavity • Stores urine • Stores about 2 cups comfortably for 2 to 5 hours • Part 4 • Urethra • Tube that leads from the bladder to the outside of the body

  8. How do I keep the urinary system healthy? • Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day • Limit your intake of caffeine and soft drinks • This can increase water loss through urine, thus dehydrating your body

  9. Now, go back to your experiment and take a look! What do you notice???

Urinary System Brochure (Slides) • Guidelines: • Groups of 2 • Create a brochure with the following info • Page 1: Title page, names, class, date 1pt • Page 2: Functions (2pts) • Page 3: Draw a diagram of the structure of the urinary system (see upper right corner). Label the four parts listed in your book. Color each part a different color! (2pts) • Page 4: Define each of the 4 parts of the urinary system. Then provide 2 facts for each part (except ureters). 5 • Page 5: Care – list at least 2 ways to care for the urinary system 2 • Page 6: Problems – In your own words, describe Cystitis, Kidney Stones, Kidney Failure, Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Kidney Transplant. • Page 7: Work Cited • Make sure your brochure is neat, creative, and colorful! Do not simply copy information from the internet… Read and summarize the information in your own words!
