Empire • An empire is a state that rules over several different cultures. • The Persians were early empire builders. • They conquered neighboring cultures. • The Persians lived in present-day Iran. E. Napp
Iran is a country in Southwest Asia. Southwest Asia is called the Middle East. E. Napp
Cyrus Expands Empire • In 539 B.C. Cyrus decides to expand Persian Empire • Conquers Babylon • Known for his generosity • Divided Persia into 20 provinces
Darius I • Darius I “The Great” • Centralized gov’t, developed judicial system • Created largest empire in the world • Ionian Revolt • Expedition into Greece to punish them for supporting the Ionians E. Napp
Xerxes I • Darius’ health began to decline • Chose his oldest son, Xerxes, to conquer Greece • Originally defeated at Battle of Marathon • Returned to conquer Greece, but defeated at Battle of Thermopylae
Persian Agriculture • There was little rainfall in Persia. • The Persians used underground water sources for farming. • Underground water sources are called aquifers. E. Napp

Ruling a Vast Empire • At the height of the Persian Empire, the Persians ruled a territory that stretched from the Nile River to the Indus River. • To rule such a vast empire, the Persians divided their empire into provinces. • Each province was ruled by a local official loyal to the Persian emperor. The Persians built roads to connect their vast empire. E. Napp
Conquered people paid tribute to the Persian emperor. E. Napp
Persian Coins Tribute is a payment from one ruler to another ruler. Paying tribute is a way to acknowledge the superior ruler. E. Napp
Zoroastrianism • The Persians worshipped many gods until Zoroaster started a new religion in about 600 B.C. • Zoroaster taught that there were two forces in the world: a force of good and a force of evil. • People were free to choose which force to follow but they would be rewarded or punished in the afterlife. Zoroaster taught that the world is a battle between the God of good, Ahura Mazda, and the force of evil. E. Napp
Zoroastrians believe that fire is a symbol of their God. E. Napp
