Why? • The Empire emerged through the leadership of Cyrus “the Great’ • He wanted to enlarge his kingdom through conquest of nearby lands and then unite them into one empire
How? • Cyrus began by taking control of the land of Media • He then conquered Anatolia (Asia Minor) • He then moved east in his conquest of the Fertile Crescent • Darius I expanded the Empire beyond the Indus River Valley
