  2. Leucippus and Democritus • Leucippus: • -Born in early 5th century BCE in Miletus • -Died in late 5th century • -Founded a school around 440BCE Leucippus Democritus: -Born in 460 BCE in Abdera -Died in 370 BCE -Travelled a lot and linked many scientists research to his own Democritus

  3. Atomic Hypothesis • Everything is composed of “atoms” • There is empty space between “atoms” • “Atoms” are indestructible • There is an infinite number of kinds of “atoms” which differ in shape and size • The shape of the “atoms” determines their connectivity

  4. Area of Study • Democritus: • -Mainly studied natural science • -Had multiple fields of study including ethics, nature, mathematics and literature.

  5. Major Scientific Contributions • The theory of the atom. • The hypothesis that void “exists” • Democritus made discoveries in mathematics
