Interesting facts The first freezing works in the district was opened by the Nelson brothers from Hastings in November 1889. At first only 200 to 300 sheep could be handled in a day. In 1890 the numbers doubled and the capacity grew steadily into one of the most up to date works in the country, handling 1000 sheep a day and killing beef all year round by 1900.
Tourism on the river The works was just not a place for killing as nearby, people use to row up the river and have picnics by the little falls on HaparaCreek. The works would have been an interesting place for boat passengers as barges were loaded or tugs pulled up on the slip way for repairs .
