Course Sequence Continued 2nd year Summer: • Introduction to Measurement and Statistics • Career Development 2nd year Fall: • INTERNSHIP • Substance Abuse Counseling 2nd year Spring: • INTERNSHIP (2ND placement) • Assessment Procedures in Counseling Total Credits: 48
Practicum • 1 full school day per week – 100 hours/40 direct total by end of semester • 1 hour per week supervision time with onsite supervisor • Assist Practicum student with establishing individual clients & audio recording permission from parents • Teacher or parent consultation project • Assist Practicum student in establishing counseling group

Internship • 3 full school days per week – 300 hours/120 direct, per semester • 1 hour per week supervision time with onsite supervisor • Assist Intern with establishing 5 ongoing individual clients & audio recording permission for 3 of the 5 • Assist Intern with establishing counseling group • Conduct a mid-term and final evaluation of intern

Definition of Supervision • A supervisor: • transmits skills, knowledge, and attitudes to the next generation of professionals • monitors the quality of services and provides ongoing constructive evaluation • acts as a gatekeeper of entrance to the profession • Adapted from Bernard & Goodyear(2004)
Keys to Successful Onsite Supervision • timely, constructive, and consistent feedback • mutual idea sharing • challenge assumptions • genuine and responsive sharing with supervisees
Professional Behavior • On a consistent basis, does the student counselor show professional standards appropriate with the role of a professional school counselor? • Does the student counselor consistently wear professional attire? • Does the student counselor demonstrate leadership, advocacy, & collaboration?
Self Awareness • Does the student counselor understand boundary issues and the importance of avoiding counter-transference responses? • Does the student counselor know the limitations and aspects of appropriate self-disclosure statements?
Case Conceptualization • Is the Practicum or Intern counselor able to articulate the correct areas to be addressed? • Can they communicate an appropriate intervention to best help in this particular situation?
Counseling Skills • Does the Practicum counselor or Intern have the correct counseling skills and techniques to address the elementary or secondary students’ concerns?
