  1. Removal Efficiency of Cd and Cr by Kaolinite and Coconut Shell Charcoal Ceramic Filter Puttachat Thonghaeng

  2. Introduction Cd → 0.0275 mg/L Yom river Nan river Cr → 0.252 mg/L Bangpagong river Prasae river Veru river http://www.mapsofworld.com/thailand/thailand-river-map.gif

  3. Introduction (Cont.) Coconut shell charcoal Kaolinite http://geopolymerhouses.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/kaolin-clay.jpg?w=500 • Natural local adsorbent material • Low cost • Easy to find • Can be applied to make a ceramic filter http://www.mskindustry.com/full-images/coconut-shell-charcoal-granules-935505.jpg

  4. Objective To determine the potential of kaolinite and coconut shell charcoal ceramic filters to remove Cd and Cr in synthetic drinking water

  5. Methodology Diameter 15 cm Ceramic filter PVC pipe high 20 cm PVC 6 “ Ceramic filter thickness 1 cm Ceramic filters were produced from kaolinite and coconut shell charcoal at 90:10 and 80:20 by weight.

  6. Methodology (Cont.) • Synthetic water with 1 mg/L of Cd and Cr was continuously fed into filtration unit. • Water collected every 12 hours • Filtration rate, pH level, Cd and Cr were measured.

  7. Results • Concentration of Cd in effluent from both filters are non-detectable. • Cd ≤ 0.003 mg/L (Drinking water standard)

  8. Results (Cont.) • Breakthrough point of Cr in effluent from ceramic filter • At ratio 90:10 = 1.28 L • At ratio 80:20= 7.26 L • Cr ≤ 0.05 mg/L (Drinking water standard)

  9. Results (Cont.) • High pH level may effect to precipitation of Cd • pH level of effluent • At ratio 90:10 pH 9.8 • At ratio 80:20 pH 9.5

  10. Results (Cont.) • Higher ratio of charcoal may increase the porosity and flow rate. • Maximum filtration rate of water by kaolinite and coconut shell charcoal ceramic filter • At ratio 90:10 = 23.8 mL/h • At ratio 80:20 = 50.8 mL/h

  11. Conclusion • Concentrations of Cd and Cr in treated water by ceramic filter were in acceptable level of drinking water. • pH level of treated water was relatively high. • Higher potential of ceramic filter to remove Cd than Cr

  12. Conclusion (Cont.) • Ceramic filter at ratio of 80:20 has higher efficiency to remove Cr and higher filtration rate • Ceramic filter at ratio of 80:20 may be applied for treatment of Cd and Cr in the contaminated drinking water resource.
