ANGUS: its origins, challenges and where it’s going!! Ian Grigor (Healthcare) Roger McNally (ISS) Calvin Clarke (Healthcare)
The early days… • NSS results – quick, comprehensible feedback and provisional marks • Used ANGUS to get it to a usable version • TQEF grant to enhance the software • ADF grant to build a product that can be used around the University
First year feedback from staff(School of Healthcare) • End of semester 1, 2007-8 • Voluntary basis only • 42 responded to survey questionnaire (40 first markers: 11 moderators) • 72% found ANGUS helpful: 6% unhelpful • Time-saving, ease of entering and editing comments • Need a spell-checker and easier identification of student IDs
First year feedback from staff (School of Healthcare) • End of semester 2, 2007-8 • Mandatory for feedback on Advanced Diploma • 54 responses to online survey questionnaire (64% for Advanced Diploma: 36% other Frameworks) • 91% found ANGUS helpful: 4% unhelpful • Ease of producing reports of different types
First year feedback from students (School of Healthcare) • 89% of Advanced Diploma students reported that they had received emails about remote access to feedback and provisional marks • 94% of these students made use of the facility • Students were very positive about the resource • Problems related to inability to access ANGUS (setup preferences on own computers) • 11 students expressed interest in helping develop ANGUS
Next steps • SLTC agreed to develop ANGUS • ANGUS development group (staff and students) • Prioritise developments from feedback (staff and students) • Allow confirmed marks to be released by ANGUS • Involve external examiners (2009-10)
Things to bear in mind… • Training for staff • Developing confidence, especially for those less computer-literate colleagues • One-to-one or group sessions • Involvement in development of software • Respond favourably to critics • Updates to user documentation
Technical challenges and their solutions • Securely providing a service to staff off- campus • DPA (1998) issues • Avoiding caching on home computers • Providing a standardised printing service
