Framing our Work in Medical Education MISSION Established in 1994, the Division of Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University, serves the continuum of medical education, including Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Continuing Medical Education. The Division undertakes and fosters research and development in medical education, with a particular emphasis in Faculty Development, Communication Skills, Medical Humanities , Medical Informatics and Program in Health and Medical Education Research.

  11. Faculty Development Program In response to ongoing changes in health care delivery and the distribution of our programs, our mandate is: “to aid faculty in attaining the knowledge and skills relevant to your role as educators, researchers, administrators and scholars”.

Communication Skills Program What we do… • responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of communication skills teaching across the continuum of medical education • pursue research relevant to communication in health care Vision and Philosophy… The Communication Skills Program supports the Faculty of Medicine’s mission to prepare highly competent, caring and socially responsible physicians. This is realized through teaching/learning activities that affirm and strengthen the patient-doctor relationship and build communication skills for effective scholarly and collaborative practice.

Humanities Healing & Education through the Arts & Life-Skills (HEALS) Program Hopes for Medical Humanities HEALS Program • To incorporate humanities into the core curriculum for every medical student, with one primary focus being Reflective Practice • To support Faculty through Professional Development to incorporate the Humanities in “every-day” teaching • To broaden the approach of the Humanities from “Medical” to “Arts in Healthcare” • To expand on community-links & collaborations

  15. Humanities Healing & Education through the Arts & Life-Skills (HEALS) Program Challenges • Engaging diverse faculty to teach with what may be for them, a novel approach • Co-ordinating scheduling & space for core curriculae for trainees from various Healthcare disciplines

  16. Medical Informatics • Informatics holds the key to a safer, more accountable, and more efficient model of health services delivery and medical education. • Our goal (and challenge) is to build capacity in the Medical Informatics program and take informatics mainstream.

Medical Informatics Current activities: • Teaching in the Undergraduate Health Informatics, Master of Health Informatics program and IDPhD programs. • Our graduate program has 17 new students this year. • We participated in the Health Informatics Intensive Orientation on September 6, 2009. • The Health Informatics Research Network Seminar Series starts October 6, 2009 and will run for the duration of the academic year

  18. Program in Health/Medical Education Research: PURPOSE To facilitate educational research across the education continuum and across health professions To increase capacity in health education research among existing and developing researchers.

  19. Interprofession Education • The Faculty of Medicine is committed to creating an environment that is optimal for learning, teaching, conducting research and providing clinical care. To achieve and sustain this, the Faculty of Medicine expects students, residents, faculty, administration and staff to display professionalism, individually and collectively, in all their interactions with each other, with patients and families/significant others, with colleagues in other professions, and with members of the public when acting under the auspices of Dalhousie University and the Faculty of Medicine.
