  2. About the Cross • There are five surviving crosses in Kells, to of which were completed. The market cross was one of these two. • The cross incorporates biblical scenes both N.T and O.T. • To find the cross turn left at the tourist Info. Centre and carry on up the street to the Old courthouse.

Engravings on the cross • The panels on the eastern face depict a procession of horsemen, Christ in the tomb, David as King of Israel and Adam and Eve slaying Abel. • Daniel in the lions tomb and the crucifixion are engraved on the crossing • The two central themes form almost all of the panels- the fall of man and divine intervention • The western face shows a hunting scene

  4. High crosses • They were usually erected on the east-west axis and it was common for the new testment engravings to be on the western side and the old testement on the eastern side • Market crosses were used to make oaths • This cross was said to have been used as a gallows in1789 when Captain Malloy hung two people from the cross!
