  1. Collaboration and Team Science CECD First Mondays — February 1, 2010 Holly Falk-Krzesinski, PhD Director, Research Team Support (RTS) Northwestern University Clinical & Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute

  2. Collaboration and Team Science • Collaboration in Science • NUCATS Research Team Support • Collaboration Preparedness • Support for Team Science

  3. Collaboration in Science • Complex biomedical and health problems require cross-disciplinary solutions • Increased demand for collaboration • Problems being addressed by teams of investigators • Number of co-authored papers has increased in every scientific discipline over the last 20 yrs • Co-authored papers are cited more frequently • Co-authored papers have higher impact ratings • Interest in the factors that determine a science team’s success

  4. Collaboration and Team Science • Collaboration in Science • NUCATS Research Team Support • Collaboration Preparedness • Support for Team Science

  5. Research Team Support • Productive cross-disciplinary research collaboration is an essential feature of a robust translational research enterprise • NUCATS Research Team Support (RTS) is charged with specifically focusing on advancing team-based, cross-disciplinary translational biomedical research collaborations

  6. Research Team Support Advancing team-based, cross- disciplinary translational biomedical research • Catalyze new clinical and translational multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary research initiatives • Develop resources and tools to promote collaboration • Conduct and support research on the science of team science • Sponsor Annual, International Science of Team Science Conference

  7. Research Team Support Praxis of Team Science • Catalyze new clinical and translational multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary research initiatives • Develop resources and tools to promote collaboration

  8. Research Team Support • Catalyze new clinical and translational cross-disciplinary research initiatives – Research Development • Coordinate special catalytic research events that encourage new research initiatives and launch new collaborations • Catalyze program development in response to the funding opportunity landscape and new research directions • Provide guidance and expertise for building and fostering connections and teams • Coordinate and manage large and complex proposal efforts by teams of researchers • Identify and disseminate funding opportunities

  9. Research Team Support • Develop resources and tools to promote collaboration • Oversee knowledge management tool selection, development, and implementation • Develop and produce online Science of Team Science learning modules • Develop a new graduate-level Team Science course for MSCI program • Define processes and admin infrastructure to promote collaboration

  10. Research Team Support Science of Team Science • The empirical field that examines the methods and processes associated with team science, and investigates ways to define, track, and measure team science efficiency and success.

  11. Research Team Support • Conduct and support research on the Science of Team Science • Team Assembly Rules and Scientific Impact; Discovery, Diagnosis, and Design of Team Networks • The impact of NUCATS in the creation of new collaborative teams and the characteristics of teams that lead to successful interdisciplinary research • How on-line, self-organized communities stimulate and facilitate scientific collaboration and The depth of a collaborative relationship from email analysis • Possible collaboration to investigate role of cyberinfrastructure to enhance team science

  12. Research Team Support • Sponsor Science of Team Science Conference • First annual conference April 22-24, 2010 in Chicago • Serve as a conduit between team science investigators and practitioners/leaders of science teams • Conduct a science of team science concept mapping project to better define field • Afford data providers and analytics developers insight about team tracking and analysis needs • Engage funding agency program staff to provide guidance on developing & managing team science initiatives and funding opportunities to support the science of team science

  13. Collaboration and Team Science • Collaboration in Science • NUCATS Research Team Support • Collaboration Preparedness • Support for Team Science

  14. Collaboration Preparedness • Could I be happy as part of a collaborative research team? • To what extent? • What would it take? • What would you gain? • Do you have anything to lose? • What do you want to do really well when participating in a team?

  15. Collaboration Preparedness • Leadership • Building the (right) team • Shared vision • Credit • Group decision-making • Conflict resolution • Communication • Team dynamics • Team management • Trust • Infrastructure to support team

  16. Collaboration and Team Science • Collaboration in Science • NUCATS Research Team Support • Collaboration Preparedness • Support for Team Science

  17. Support for Team Science • Multi-project Proposals • Collaboration and interaction among investigator-initiated projects and investigators to achieve a common goal • At least two inter-related research projects related to a theme • P01, Program Project Grants (PPGs) • P50, Specialized centers of research • U19, Multiproject cooperative agreements • U54, Specialized Center-Cooperative Agreement • Investigator initiated or solicited by PA/RFA • Simultaneous R01 submission allowed

  18. Support for Team Science • NIH Administrative Supplements for Collaborative Science • Smaller scale collaboration vs P01 or even multi-investigator R01 programs • Support for R01, P01, R37, R21, U01, or U54/U56 awards • Support new collaborations not anticipated at he time of original submission • NIH NIGMS Administrative Supplements for Collaborative Science • NIH NCI Division of Cancer Biology Administrative Supplements for Activities to Promote Research Collaborations

  19. Support for Team Science • Consortia • Subcontracts/Subawards • Linked Awards • UL1 (NIH) • IRC • CTSA • Collaborative Proposal (NSF)

  20. Support for Team Science • Multiple PI/PDs • Team approach • Complex problem • Supplement, not replace, single PI model • Will not apply to some awards (F31/32, R36, S10, DP1, K awards) • Project authority and responsibility • Distribution of credit • Allocation of funds • Decision must be consistent with the scientific/program goals of the project • Must develop a Leadership Plan

  21. Support for Team Science • Leadership Plan • Roles/areas of responsibility of the PIs • Fiscal and management coordination • Process for making decisions on scientific direction and allocation of resources • Data sharing and communication among investigators • Publication and intellectual property (if needed) policies • Procedures for resolving conflicts

  22. Support for Team Science • NIH Bench-to-Bedside program • Encourage partnerships between intramural and extramural programs • AACR Team Science Award • Acknowledge and catalyze the growing importance of interdisciplinary teams to the understanding of cancer and/or the translation of research discoveries into clinical cancer applications
