This lesson • This lesson, we will be testing to see if different liquids are an acid or a base. • You need to remember the following: • Red litmus paper turns blue if it is an base. • Blue litmus paper turns red if it is an acid. • The litmus paper will not change color if it is neutral or the same. Red is acidic. Blue is basic.
Testing Chemicals • Draw a table with five columns. • In the second column, write if you think it will be an acid, base or neutral (Prediction). • Third Column is Blue Litmus Paper. Fourth Column is Red Litmus Paper. • Fifth column is Acid/Base (correct answer). • Chemicals used are: Hydrochloric, Dish Soap, Coke Zero, Lime Water, Alcohol, Sodium Hydroxide, Vinegar, Ammonia.
Questions • Were your predictions correct or incorrect? Explain • Can this way of testing acids and bases tell us if it is a strong or weak acid/base? Explain.
