Growth Mindset and Habits of MindGavilan College August 14th-16thMiguel Powers, Fullerton CollegeScott Sandler, Gavilan College
Applying Learning to Personal Practice • Will work to give more beneficial feedback to students to support growth mindset • Will work on GM activities like drawing picture of brain, spoon and cotton ball activity, and share ESL learning strategies to show how the brain works. • Will reconsider grading/assessment structure/approaches • Will use basic illustrations and vocabulary to convey GM to limited English speakers • Will add “how the brain works” to first class • Will create equity activities so students won’t feel so bad because they often compare themselves to others.
Applying Learning to Personal Practice • Will consider ways to build community/relationships in both classes (learning communities) • Will put HoM on strips, present, and discuss. • Will work on non-verbal (or bilingual) presentations of GM/HoM • Will think about motivation strategies that works in my classroom. • Will use backwards design/nesting with others and to help me with me with personal planning and assessment. Will consider role of Habits in assessment work.
Questions * How to incorporate an assessment rubric that encourages a GM. * Are rubrics embraced in adult school/college? • More strategies to help ESL students ask more questions. * How can one learn “thinking flexibly”—along the lines of “how do you know what you don’t know”? * Some time for collaboration? More time for collaboration. No questions at this point, but might think of some down the road.
Big Questions Which resources do students already know about and are widely using? Which resources may students need, but do not know about? How can we help to promote campus resources? What resources might students need that we do not have on our campus?

Creating, Innovating, Collaborating Reflect upon Growth Mindset, Habits of Mind, Equity, Flow, Assessment, feedback strategies, motivation strategies, and/or any other ideas that surfaced over these three days. Come up with an idea for a lesson plan, activity, project, assessment/feedback strategy, action plan, etc. This is just a starting point. In groups, share, offer suggestions, consider ways to upcycle.
