  2. WHAT are ISPMs? • ISPM = International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures • Developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (under WTO) by NPPOs • Facilitate development of pest prevention regulations by member countries

  3. A Phytosanitary Measure • Must be technically justified (science) • Must be least restrictive of trade • ISPMs • help harmonize measures • Improve trade flow • Reduce the spread of pests

  4. WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? • Pests arrive mostly in trade • PREVENTION is key! • PROTECT global biodiversity

Standards and Regulations will be developed with or w/o you • Forestry world surprised by ISPM-15 • Only about 40% effective • Treatment failure or failure to treat???? • New standards under development for: • Wood products • Seed • Plants for Planting • Forest Surveillance (planning stage) • Wooden Handicrafts (future) • Biological Control (future)
