GOALS At the conclusion of this orientation, you should: • Be familiar with YFU history and structure • Understand who YFU participants are • Be exposed to YFU regulations, standards and funding • Be familiar with the basic YFU programs • Be aware of the variety of volunteer roles within YFU • Understand the volunteer support structure and resources • Learn some features on the MY.YFU.ORG website • Be aware of further training opportunities

YFU HISTORY & STRUCTURE • YFU was founded in 1951 by Rachel Andresen as a response to WWII • Rachel Andresen was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 • 250,000+ students have been on a YFU exchange • Approximately 2,000 students come to the US from around 60 countries each year • Approximately 500 students travel overseas from the USA each year

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAMS High School Program Year: August – June Fall Semester: August – December Community College Program 17 – 23 year old students in approximately 10 community colleges across the US.
REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS • YFU Basic Standards YFU organizations around the world have shared guidelines • US Department of State YFU is designated as a sponsor for J1 student visas • CSIET (Council on Standards for International Education Travel) YFU is listed as an accredited program with CSIET
YFU USA FUNDING Student Tuition Paid by parents or through student fund raising projects Scholarship Programs Funding by governments, corporations, foundations and individuals Charitable donations 501(c)3 non-profit corporation
YOUTH FORUNDERSTANDING International Student (IS) Programs
SELECTION CRITERIA International Students: • 15 – 18 years old • Above average grades • Positive interview • English language ability Host Families: • Complete an online application • Submit photos of home and family • Have a positive in-home interview • 3 personal references are checked • Clean criminal background check (CBC)
EXPECTATIONS International Students: • YFU Policies and Procedures • Attend 3 in-person orientations • Monthly in-person or phone contact with a YFU Area Representative (AR) • Provide own spending money Host Families: • Provide for additional household member (room, food, etc.) • Enable participation in larger community (transportation) • Follow YFU Policies and Procedures • Attend orientation events • Monthly in-person or phone contact with YFU Area Representative

LIABILITY INSURANCE Volunteers are covered by the same general liability insurance coverage that protects Youth For Understanding USA as a non-profit corporation. This coverage is in effect while volunteers are acting at the direction of staff and within the scope of their duties for YFU USA.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST YFU USA volunteers and staff are expected to devote their best efforts to the interests of the organization and its activities. YFU USA reserves the right to determine an individuals outside activities or relationship may present a direct or perceived conflict with YFU USA’s interests or are the cause of concern with respect to the quality of the YFU program, safety of YFU participants or the reputation of YFU USA.
