Access Services – Better than Marmite? Ian Woodgate Ian.woodgate@pointbeyond.com
The Marmite Issue • I love Access because • I can maintain databases myself • I can distribute and share my database • I can “get at” all the data • Its familiar and on my desktop • I hate Access because • Users maintain databases themselves (and design badly, get stuck, or leave) • Users distribute and share the databases • The data is insecure • I have to deploy/manage Access clients and other components • It doesn’t scale well
True Stories… Fred left the company on bad terms. We don’t know the password to the sales database -large utilities company Our figures don’t match theirs. We keep two copies of the database. A database was left on a train…
Agenda • Building a solution from scratch • Summary – a better flavour of Access?
Let’s take a look • Freedom of information requests • Simplified! • Going to use • UI Macros • Data Macros • Reports • Other goodies! • Under the bonnet
A better flavour of Access? • Yes • Design can be controlled • Permissions can be controlled • Data is stored centrally and backed up (I hope) • Scalability improved • But • Need web databases (or hybrid approach) • Still need to plan security • Bad design is still supported • Users can still get stuck or leave • No way to package and deploy upgrades • Feels like v1…
Review • Reasons behind the Marmite issue • Building an Access Services application • UI Macros • Data Macros • Custom Data Types • Reporting • Navigation • Publish to SharePoint • Under the bonnet • A better flavour of Access
Final Thought – Composite Applications • Time and cost vs flexibility
