  1. Reviewing NIR SIG

  2. NIR SIG Today – Charter and guidelines • Charter • Conducts elections and open to proposals about NIR operations, based on the SIG guidelines To share information relating to the operations, policies, and procedures of National Internet Registries with the aim of promoting close cooperation both between the NIRs and with the APNIC Secretariat

  3. NIR SIG Today – How Sessions are Run • Focus on information exchanges about NIR activities • No proposals have been made since APNIC20, Sep 2005 One time sharing of information based on the topics each NIRs feel is appropriate

  4. How APNIC and NIRs exchange information outside the SIG • APNIC-NIR monthly meeting • Bilateral between APNIC and each NIR • NIR workshop • APNIC and all NIRs, twice a year at APNIC conferences APNIC NIR NIR NIR

  5. Situation Surrounding APNIC and NIRs • Shift from IPv4 to IPv6 based address management • Less workload on address distribution – shift in priorities as an internet registry? • Role of NIRs being reviewed in light of Internet Governance • Registry’s role in Today’s Operational needs • Outreach and training for IPv6 deployment • Role of Internet Registries for routing integrity (RQA, IRR, RPKI)

  6. Questions • Is there a room to reform the SIG to make it more useful than it is today? • Are there areas that helps to have specific focus for more collaboration between NIRs and APNIC secretariat?

  7. Possible Areas for More Collaboration Role of registry for operational needs -Routing integrity (RQA, routing security) - IPv6 Deployment Exchanging technical Knowledge - RPKI, IRR, DNSSEC • Policy Fora • Situation within NIR • and its community Policy Deployment e.g. inter APNIC-NIR/ NIR transfers • Outreach and Training • Collaborative message/ • Knowledge for IPv6?

  8. Possible mechanisms for more information exchanges • Make use of Wiki • Would it be useful to have a way to share certain information regularly such as stats, or events? • Extend APNIC-NIR conference to a joint APNIC-NIRs conference once every x months? • Dedicated ML where appropriate APNIC and NIR staff are included?

  9. Would it help to reformat the session? • Does it need to follow a SIG format? • Would NIR Forum sound closer for meeting its function? • Possibly incorporate updates of activities as a part of RIR updates session (“Global Reports”) and focus on other discussions topic at NIR SIG/Forum? • Do we need to have regular elections with Chairs and Co-Chairs? • An alternative idea is to take turns in chairing for less formalities • Possible issue: • What do we do when we have a policy proposal related to NIR operations? • Should we keep it as a Sleeping SIG for this possibility?

  10. Ideas for Discussions • List specific topics of common interests for more focused information exchanges and collaboration • Call for topics that would be of an interest to hear other NIRs’ situation? • Free to share any information each NIRs wish to share in addition • Add a mechanism to facilitate more information exchanges on regular basis • not limited to bi-annual face to face meetings and public mailing lists • Reformat the session to allow more casual discussions and exchanging opinions • Not to be bound by operations defined by the SIG guidelines • Make NIR SIG a sleeping SIG, and regularly hold NIR Forum (tentative name)
