  2. History • ​Thetradition started in Freamundeas early as the 1900s. • ​Nowadays it is celebrated in Freamunde, Bragança, Lixa, Barcelos and other locations, during the summer time. • ​This tradition celebrates the summer solstice. • ​In Freamunde it is celebrated during the Sebastianas.​

  3. Definition • ​In very basic terms, the "cow of fire" is a pirotecnic box in the form of a cow in which flaming sticks are placed, making it seem that it is on fire. Then two members of the community enter its interior and run after other people, making it a pretty dangerous activity. This normally starts at dawn, around 4 am, due to the danger that it represents to children and the elderly.
