  5. FAIR TRADEFair Trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue,transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of,marginalised producers and workers – especially in the South.

  7. Fair Trade History • USA > 1946 – 10,000 vilages buying from Puerto Rico needleworks > 1958, 1st formal Fair Trade shop • Europe > 1950s, Oxfam UK started to sell crafts made by chinese refugees > Netherlands, 1967 importing “Fair Trade Original”

  8. FAIR TRADE HISTORY • Dutch 3rd world grps - sold handicrafts from the South > 1969, “Third World Shop” • Fair Trade movement from 60s onwards - associated primarily w/ development trade - grew as a response to poverty in the South - by NGOs , religious orgns
