More molecules of life Lipids Like carbohydrates, lipids contain C, H, and O. Unlike carbohydrates, lipids have many C and H, but very few O atoms.
Lipids do not dissolve in water Types of lipids: 1) Fatty acids. This is a lipid monomer. It has a long chain of C atoms and a COOH end (see board).
2) triglycerides. These are how fatty acids are stored in the body. A triglyceride consists of one molecule of glycerol and 3 fatty acids. H2C-------CH-------CH2 (glycerol) O O O Fatty acid fatty acid fatty acid
What do lipids do? • Energy storage. Fatty acids store more energy in their bonds than sugars do. Triglycerides provide long term storage of energy. • Heat. The high energy in these bonds provides heat and insulation for a cell.
3. Membranes. A membrane is the outside of a cell. Since lipids don’t dissolve, they can form a barrier to keep cell contents in the cell. 4. Chemical messengers. Lipids in membranes are a special triglyceride. The first fatty acid is replaced by PO4 (phosphate). This allows part of the lipid to dissolve in water.
