4. Meet Robbie! Hello kids my name is Robbie! I love to recycle and keep our Earth green! I will be teaching you all about how to recycle at school, home, and on the island! Together we can make the world cleaner and safer!

5. Accommodations • Personalization- The specific example listed relate directly to students in their school and neighborhood. • Color-Color has been used in order to help children see what is important and should be remembered. It also is used to attract the children's eyes and keep students attention. • Repetition- The Robbie character is used on every concept page to help the children understand the important concepts about Recycling. This allows the student to predict when something important is coming up in the unit. • Contests within the Class- Competition for best poster of recycling was used to help children feel passionate about the unit, and become more involved with the learning process amongst their school community. • Concept Mapping- Used to overview ideas used to help better understand recycling. • Predictable Games- These games were used to help better prepare the students for the information being presented to them. This helps students to better expect what is in the unit. • Film Clips- Three film clips were used in this presentation in order to elaborate the concepts, and get at risk children interested in the material. • Game formats using higher level thinking questions- Several of the worksheets that were used challenged children, yet did not frustrate them. They were set at an ability level able to achieve after close attention to the unit.

8. Now we will learn what recycling is all about! What is recycling? Recycling is the process of separating, collecting, processing, and using material that would have been thrown away. Click on the title for a recycling activity! These materials are reused, or remanufactured to form new products. Many new products are made from recycled materials, such as the pictures below.

9. Why we Recycle? Now that we know what recycling is we must know…. • Non renewable resources are the things on the earth that will eventually run out because they cannot be produced or “reused” • Some non-renewable resources are oil and coal. • Our renewable resources are those things that may be produced. This includes water, wind, and the sun. 1.)To make sure we do not use up nonrenewable resources 2.)To use our other resources wisely 3.) How we can help? • Natural resources such as trees, produce paper which is usually thrown away after one use. • We should be doing everything we can to help keep our forests from going away. • In school this could be done by setting up a paper bin, where old papers can be sent to be recycled. • Paper is only thought of as garbage when food touches it, meaning that most of the paper in school can be recycled. 13. Its time to bring what you have learned about school recycling to your home! Recycling at Home Click on the recycling bin to find out the steps of how to recycle at home. Step 1 Ask your parents what can be recycled. We have already learned that paper, plastic and aluminum are good things to recycle. Your parents can help you find out what items can be recycled in your home. Step 2 Find an easy place to put separate recycling bins. A good place for these bins could be under the sink, in the kitchen, in the backyard. Choose a place you will always see so that you can remember to recycle! Step 3 The final step is to place each item in the correct bin. All things that can be recycled have numbers on the bottom of the item to help you sort. Syrup bottles and yogurt containers Disposable knives ,forks, spoons and cups. Anything "other" is made of any combination of 1-6 plastic

In order to join, we must make sure that our principal understand all we know about recycling

19. Here is how recycling can help in Rhode Island, right on our island! Save the Bay was launched to make sure all the water on Narragansett Bay stays clean! In order to help keep this bay clean, we must recycle. Since we know that recycling REDUCES our waste, this will help to save the bay. At First Beach, in our hometown of Newport, Save the Bay has created the Exploration Center. This center was designed to get children to understand the importance of fresh water fish and fisherman How does Save the Bay help? This effort helps to keep fresh fish alive They make sure that no trash surrounds the area of the water. It keeps the water clean for fishers, swimmers, and boaters to enjoy the beautiful water!
