Review comments from viewers of our first major exhibition [Bournemouth Library October 2011 • The exhibition has opened my eyes to a culture that I have seen in passing and has allowed a much closer look at the inner workings of it -- STANFORD   • A very well and widely informative display of the Chinese culture and traditions. Allows people from various cultures and backgrounds to have a clear and basic understanding of the Chinese culture -- JESSICA   • Through the forum of this society personally I get an opportunity to share the cultures of different countries. I am interested in the OCES exhibitions because people of different countries with different cultures can share talks with each other. I found some common things of my country to theirs, and it is a heyday for me.   6. Bu International Art: Multicultural Learning Exhibition By Pippa Bowker, Libby Coe, Hannah Welch, Sam Anderson, Emma Butler and Ruth Davies

The Bournemouth University Events Management Feng Shui in our Local Urban Environment project (Bournemouth Library, February 2011) This very successful OCES supported project was undertaken by six Bournemouth University undergraduate students during the Autumn 2010 – Spring 2011 period. The challenge they were given was to grasp basic Chinese Feng Shui concepts and to research how these are applied in the Bournemouth and Poole urban environment. Here are their comments about what they learned by the end of the project … • 'Organising this event has made me more aware of how the Chinese culture influences every day life' – Emma  • 'When viewing a new house, I am more aware of the good and bad energy that influences your emotions'. – Pippa  • 'I am more aware of the importance of learning about other cultures.' – Ruth  • ‘It's amazing how the layout and look of objects can influence how you feel, I will definitely take more • notice of my surroundings from now on.' – Libby  • 'Having learnt about Feng Shui, I visited Hong Kong and was further enriched by the beauty of this art.' – Hannah  • 'I have thoroughly enjoyed working along side Alan {OCES founder] and the society, and thank you for the opportunity.' - Sam

  30. OCES Public Services information– NHS Simplified Chinese ‘Accessing GP Services’ pamphlet --kindly translated by Dorset NHS Communications Department at the request of the OCES.

The OCES Public Services information resource • In addition to promoting cross-cultural learning and greater knowledge about in particular the globalised aspects of Chinese culture, the other dimension of the OCES work involves community engagement and social welfare (such as through the LINks survey: image left). • The society has created a unique one-stop on-line information resource in Chinese. It covers key public service organisations such as the NHS, the Dorset Police, advocacy and equality, diversity and anti-discrimination bodies and groups. In the slide above at the request of OCES Chair Alan, Dorset NHS Communications Department kindly produced a Simplified Chinese translation of a key pamphlet detailing how to access GP services. • Information of this kind and all of that listed on the OCES public service / ‘UK Life’ section of our website is designed to help those members of the Dorset Chinese community who face linguistic and cultural acclimatisation barriers in learning of their rights, how to access services, and how to become more fully involved in broader society. We receive contacts from new Chinese UK residents often in extreme positions of social isolation, who subsequently are enabled through accessing our information resource to enjoy much improved quality of life.
