Saint PaulSustainable Building Policy Training Module Five Construction Waste Reduction
Construction waste reduction Background Waste reduction requirements General reporting requirements Specific sustainable building standard requirements
Background Construction activities create hundreds of millions of tons of waste every year. Construction waste management has benefits upstream and downstream of the materials manufacturing process. Upstream benefits include the reduction in demand for virgin resources and manufactured materials. Downstream benefits include the reduction of waste sent to landfills.
Background Increasing the amount of building materials recycled can also reduce cost, depending on tipping and recycling fees.
Requirements The requirements of the Saint Paul Overlay to the Sustainable Building Policy are to divert at least 75% of construction waste from landfills. For projects without a satisfactory waste reduction credit or requirement, it will be necessary to complete the Construction Waste Calculator available at www.sustainablebuildingpolicy.umn.edu/saintpaul.
Using the Construction Waste Calculator The construction waste calculator predicts an average amount of waste produced, based on the overall square footage of the building. It then measures the recycled amounts of corrugated cardboard, metals, concrete and rubble, dimensional lumber and wood, gypsum wallboard and “other” materials. The calculator measures in weight, by tons.
Using the Construction Waste Calculator – Construction waste log
General reporting requirements for all guideline systems Completion of the construction waste calculator. Completion of log of all materials recycled and landfilled with receipts from waste management provider. • This may be in individual logs or a summary by waste management provider, detailing quantity and type, and percentage or each type diverted from landfill • Log template available at www.sustainablebuildingpolicy.umn.edu/saintpaul. Submit completed calculator and log to PED and DSI
