Structure of OZ grape growing sector • Large wine companies have significant areas of vineyards • Increasing number of privately managed investment schemes (MIS) • Well qualified vineyard managers/Technical staff • Increasing number of “Professional” grape growers who solely rely on grapes • Rising level of education for most sectors • Highly mechanised production systems • Pruning/harvesting

RESEARCH PROVIDERS • CSIRO, AWRI & Universities • Fundamental/Basic Research • Targeted high level Technical advice to Industry • State based Agencies • Mix of basic and applied research • Some still have free extension services for grape growers • Increasing number of viticulture consultants in all regions • Some undertake applied research

  4. GWRDC funded research projects are required to describe Technology Transfer mechanisms • Journals • ASVO Journal – AJGW • Annual Research updates • Final reports available on GWRDC website

CRC for Viticulture • Research to Practice Workshops • Soil & Water Management • Wine grape Quality • Nutrition • Berry Sensory Analysis • Two-day interactive workshops • 30-40 growers • Key scientists encouraged to participate • Ute guides • Played a major role in the rapid OZ-wide uptake of improved irrigation management practises such as RDI

ADFA, TGA • Major annual conference covering all aspects • Industry outlook, financial aspects, market opportunities • Conduct major annual ‘Field Days’ for growers • Regular newsletters to all members • Annual updates to growers on outcomes of supported research projects

  7. Wine Companies • Larger companies have Grower Liaison Officers (GLO’s) and Technical Officers (Techo’s) • Often have “Focus” groups • Eg “Shiraz focus groups” • Regular meetings with growers • Annual Grower Days • Growers are ‘encouraged’ to attend seminars/field days etc !!

National Technical Conferences • Triennial Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference • Plenary sessions • Many half & one-day workshops on all aspects of viticulture & oenology • ASVO • Annual one-day seminar for viticulture & winemaking sectors • Table & Dried fruit sectors • Annual grower seminars

Regional Activities • Many regions have “Viticulture Technical Groups” • Growers/wine company staff • Conduct regular seminars/field days/farm walks specifically for grapegrowers • “Some like it Hot” • “Viticulture 04” • “SA Viticulture Seminar” • “Managing Vineyards with reduced irrigation allocations”

  12. Summary • Australian grape growers have ready access to the most up to date information from a number of sources • The method of delivery of information to growers has significantly changed over the last 20 years • We must continue to explore new technologies to achieve this.
