  3. The background to DISTILLATE • EPSRC SUE Programme launched 3/01 • Multi-disciplinary; Multi-institutional • Meeting the needs of practitioners • An opportunity to tackle the barriers to implementing urban transport strategies • Scoping study: 2003 • Research programme launched 4/04

DISTILLATE Objectives • Vision: • step change in the development and delivery of sustainable transport and land use strategies • given current context and challenges over next 20 years • Principal objective: • to develop ways of overcoming the barriers to effective development and delivery of sustainable transport and land use strategies • to contribute to improvements over 20 years, while being relevant to today’s needs

DISTILLATE Objectives • Specific objectives based on Scoping Study: • document and review barriers to delivery • develop strategy and scheme generation methods • establish effective set of indicators, targets • support more effective collaboration • reduce financial and other implementation barriers • enhance predictive models • improve appraisal methods

  6. Local authority partners • 16 local transport organisations • A range of different types and contexts • Each with one or more case studies Project A

Interaction with end users • Local authorities and case studies • Case studies used to inform research, test concepts • While retaining flexibility as conditions change • Steering Committee • Representing EPSRC, DfT, ODPM, Transport Scotland, LGA, LAs, EC, ECMT • Reference Group Workshops • Representing other stakeholders • Now 60 strong • Interaction with Department for Transport and Transport Scotland • Reviewing opportunities to test ideas as policy and practice develop • Outputs publicised • Through our website: www.distillate.ac.uk • Through conferences and journals
