  1. Converting Food Waste IntoEnergy and Fertilizer How using an InSinkErator® disposer allows capable wastewater treatment plants to recycle food waste into renewable energy and fertilizer

  2. COLLECTION Food waste disposers grind food scraps into fine particles, which flow through the sewer system to a wastewater treatment facility.

  3. BAR SCREEN Screens and grates remove large objects before the wastewater moves to settling tanks.

  4. SEDIMENTATION Material that floats is skimmed from the surface and material that settles is scraped from the tank bottom.

  5. AERATION Microscopic organisms break down the remaining organic material in the water.

  6. CLARIFICATION Secondary sedimentation separates clean water from the remaining solids which are either digested or returned to the aeration tanks to further continue the process.

  7. DISCHARGE Treated and disinfected wastewater is discharged into nearby waters.

  8. DIGESTERS Anaerobic digesters use microorganisms that digest the solids and release methane gas which can be used to generate power.

  9. POWER GENERATION Methane from the treatment process is used to power the facility.

  10. BIOSOLIDS A product of the digestion process are biosolids, which can be converted into fertilizer or soil conditioner used in agriculture and home gardening.
