Introduction to Morality Part 2
Grace • Grace is the help God gives us to respond to our vocation of becoming his adopted sons. It introduces us into the intimacy of the Trinitarian life. (CCC 2021) • There are two types of grace: • (1) Sanctifying grace: • - This is the grace that confers new life on our souls. • - We first receive this grace at Baptism, and it is nourished by the Eucharist. If we lose it by moral sin, it can be restored through Reconciliation.
Grace • (2) Actual grace: • - This is a temporary grace given by God. • - Actual grace helps us to obtain, preserve, and grow in sanctifying grace. • - This grace gives us the knowledge and strength to do what is good and right.
Syllogistic REASONING • In order to engage in philosophical and religious discussion, we must learn how to reason correctly by learning about a simple syllogism. • Step 1: Turn the question into a conclusion • “Why C is A?” becomes “thus, C is A” • Step 2: Identify the subject and predicate (English class should help here) • “thus, C is A” • C is the subject; A is the predicate
Syllogistic Reasoning • Step 3: Build your reasoning through premises • Premise 1 (Major Premise): ? is P ? is A • Premise 2 (Minor Premise): S is ? C is ? • … thus, C is A • Step 4: Find a “glue term” • B is A • C is B • … thus, C is A
Syllogistic Reasoning • WHY IS THEOLOGY HARD TO UNDERSTAND? • God is hard to understand • Theology is about God • … thus, Theology is hard to understand
Syllogistic Reasoning • WHY IS LOVE SACRED? • God is sacred. • God is love. • Thus, love is sacred. • Because the very substance of our God is a Trinitarian • love, love itself is to be regarded as sacred, since • whatever is related to the divine is what is called • sacred.
Practice • Why is Catholic morality objective? • Catholic morality is objective. • Catholic morality (subject) is objective (predicate) • ? is objective • Catholic morality is ? • Thus, Catholic morality is objective.
Your Turn • Why does happiness require God?
