  1. Psychology 290Special Topics Study Course: Advanced Meta-analysis March 12, 2014

  2. The plan for today • Wrapping up the VC model. • Funnel plot asymmetry and publication bias. • Weighted distributions. • Obtaining and running selection program. • Estimating the simple random-effects selection program with the GATB.

  3. Funnel plot asymmetry • Introducing funnel plots. • Causes of funnel plot asymmetry. • Causes of publication bias.

  4. Funnel plots • Plot of effect size against sample size (or weights). • Plot of effect size against standard errors. • Correct orientation. • Example in R.

  5. Causes of asymmetry • Self-censorship • Selected reporting • Kay Dickerson • Sequential hypothesis testing • Editorial policies • Complicated mean models that have nothing to do with all that

  6. Weighted distributions • Suppose you have a density, but you want to modify it by making some regions more or less likely. • This can be accomplished by a weight function. • However, to maintain the function as a density, it must be renormalized. • Discussion of the weight-function model’s likelihood.
