APPA’s Sustainability Award • APPA is committed to supporting its members’ ability to create and maintain sustainable campus environments. • APPA's Sustainability Award in Facilities Management is designed to recognize and advance sustainability excellence in educational facilities. • This is APPA's newest award and is reflective of APPA's "Sustainability Statement“ • This award recognizes the facilities management department that has integrated sustainable policies and "green" practices throughout all facets of the organization and embedded them within the educational institution.

Curriculum & Research: In the Classroom • Almost 1 out of 5 courses taught in 2012 were focused on or related to sustainability. • 115 faculty members at American University, just over 25% of the total number of faculty involved in research, are undertaking sustainability research • Faculty can earn a Green Teaching Certificate for committing to a range of greener activities in the classroom

  15. Curriculum & Research: Outside the Classroom • AU’s Sustainability Fund gives mini-grants to support on campus research and projects, such as the community garden, bike repair stations, and a campus apiary.

  21. Maintenance & Operations Grounds AU strives to practice low-impact, low-maintenance, low-resource-use landscaping methods suited to the unique environment of campus • 11 green roofs cover about 6% of AU’s total roof space • AU’s campus is a certified arboretum

Maintenance & Operations Zero Waste Between 2005 and 2010, AU reduced the waste sent to landfill by 33% • Organic waste is collected in buildings across campus and composted along with food from AU’s dining halls, coffee grounds from a student-run coffee shop, paper towels from all bathrooms, and yard waste. • Waste audits confirm that over 90% of waste on campus is divertible.

  23. Maintenance & Operations Transportation AU’s vehicle fleet contains 12 all-electric service vehicles • B20 biodiesel blend used in all AU shuttle buses and other diesel powered equipment • AU’s free campus shuttles have a ridership of almost 2 million trips every year

  24. Energy & Utility Despite adding over half a million square feet between 2005 and 2010, AU was able to reduce energy consumption by 17.7% over the same period. AU is home to DC’s largest solar photovoltaic array: 2,150 individual panels total 500 kW in capacity 174 solar hot water panels make up the largest urban solar thermal system on the East Coast which provides hot showers to more than 2,000 students and hot water to the university’s largest dining hall.

  25. Planning & Construction Green Building Policy sets LEED Gold minimum for new buildings and major renovations. AU is one of three universities in the world using LEED Volume to bulk-certify existing buildings. LEED Volume is for organizations planning to certify 25 or more buildings.
