  6. Clauses • Clause • A clause must have a • 1) NOUN • 2) VERB and • 3) a COMPLETE THOUGHT

  7. Clauses • Independent Clause • A grouping of words that can stand alone. • Example: “I’ll be back” –Terminator • An independent clause is often a part of a larger sentence • Example: I’ll be back, and when I come back you better have your homework done!

Clauses • Dependent Clause • A grouping of words that CANNOT stand on their own. • Example: “If you are going to let every little thing bother you.”-The Princess and the Frog • A dependent clause needs independent clauses to help support them. • Example: “If you are going to let every little thing bother you, it’s going to be a very long night. “

  9. Independent and Dependent Clauses • Independent Clause is like an adult • A dependent clause is like a child.

  11. Simple Sentence • Simple Sentence • This contains one independent clause or is like an adult. Noun Verb “Life is like a box of chocolates.” Complete Thought

  12. WRITE A SIMPLE SENTENCE • Subject: Heather • Verb: Joined • Complete Thought: A club at club rush day. • CHECK IT: • Heatherjoined a club at club rush day. 12

  13. Compound Sentence • This contains two independent • clauses or like a married couple. • “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villan .” –Batman Begins

  14. Compound Sentence • The two independent clauses can be combined by a COMMA and a FANBOYS • F = for • A = and • N = nor • B = but • O = or • Y = yet • S = so

WRITE A COMPOUND SENTENCE • Subject 1: Maribel • Verb 1: completes • Complete Thought 1: all of her homework • Subject 2: her brother Anthony • Verb 2: steals • Complete Thought 2: all of her homework • FANBOYS: but • CHECK IT: • Maribelcompletesall of her homework, but her brother Anthonystealsall of her homework. 15

  16. Complex Sentence • This contains an independent clause • and a dependent clause or is like • a single parent and a child. “They don't exist because this is a movie!” –Last Action Hero

  17. Complex Sentence • Combining Independent Clause (IC) and Dependent Clause (DC): • IC no comma DC. • or • DC , IC. • Dependent Clauses start with words like Because, Since, When, Although, Unless.

  31. YOUR TURN TO WRITE! • Please write one of each of the types of sentences in your tablet. (Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex) • Once they’re written, have your elbow partner check them—if they are wrong, you must re-write the incorrect sentences to correct them. • Together with your elbow partner, write 4 new sentences (one of each type) on a piece of filler paper to turn in. 31
