Economy • During the 1960’s, USA experienced a long period of uninterrupted economic expansion. Big business dominated the economy, while housing and computer overpowered automobiles and chemicals, which were the top industries in the 1950’s. • A gallon of gas only costed .25 cents in 1962, while tennis shoes only costed 5.00$!
Culture • During the 60’s, one of the most popular bands was the Beatles. • The Andy Griffith Show was the epitome of prime time family television. • To Kill a Mocking Bird was a popular book during this decade.
Fashion/Fads • Youth dominated the culture for the 1960’s. • Barbie dolls became popular. • Skate boards became a good way to stay active for many teens. • Bell bottom jeans, love beads, and embellished T-shirts were popular.
Slang • “babe” was used to describe any girl. • “Chill” meant to calm down. • “A Gas” meant having lots of fun, as in,” That’s a gas!”
Interesting Facts • 70 million children grew up in the sixties, all from the post-war baby boom. • G.I. Joe, created in the 60’s, was the first action figure for boys. • The first moon landing was made in 1969.
