Where New Engineers Deliver New Ideas! Spring 2008
Our efforts to date have helped the Remembrance Foundation to focus their thoughts about what they want. There continues to be concern about significant cuts and fills in regards to seismic behavior. Some good ideas came out of Phase I that might help with the new concept. Phase I Evaluation
Phase I Time Report Total Hours: 1075 hrs (not counting survey before start of semester) Average Time per person: 35.8 hrs Average time per person per week: 5.97 hrs/week
Phase II Site Alternative A 1390 ft of trail 30’x100’ Bldg (2) Bridges
Phase II Site Alternative B 1875 ft of trail 30’x100’ Bldg (1) Bridge
Path Criteria All walkways to have a maximum slope of 1:20. Let’s not push it if we don’t have to! Upslope cuts should be kept to 24”. They cannot exceed 30”! We need to leave some allowance for different site conditions. Each of the two major alternatives are to consider An overall “path” width of 10’ An overall “path” width of 20’ The walkways are to be heated. Consider amenities such as benches, lighting, landscaping. Task one person from each Alternative to work on bring utilities to the building
Pod Design Work with Remembrance Foundation to get list of artifacts and sizes. Design pods that can be “plugged in” to the site layouts. Coordinate with site design groups. Consider rectangular as well as round or oval Can have retaining walls up to 4 ft high.
Pod Designs Consider three alternatives for each shape: Half in the hill, half out All in the hill All out of the hill
The Band Stand - To be located on lower slope. - Need to research bandstand sizes. - Design to fit anywhere in the area. - No design for seating… grassy slope will be used. Provide alternatives in Steel and Timber http://www.bboogie.com/Chatham_Band.htm
Environmental, Safety, & Permitting Environmental This is tied in with permitting below Identify all environmental concerns and means for addressing them Safety Determine the safety requirements for the project based on IBC and ADA requirements Communicate criteria to the design groups Permitting Prepare a comprehensive list of all permits that will be required for the project. Identify key design items needed for each permit. Where possible, obtain and fill out permit applications, acquiring required information from the design groups.
Cost Estimating & Specifications Prepare a running estimate of the various alternatives. Present your best guess of project costs at each weekly meeting Identify specifications that need to be written for this project. Prepare a table of contents and draft specifications.
