Health & Well being Paragraph on youth health in the Communication on promoting young people's full participation in education, employment and society (2007) Council Resolution on Health and Well-being of Young people adopted on 20 November 2008 ( French Presidency) Youth Health Initiative launched by DG SANCO on 10 July 2009 Health and Well-being of Young People = one of the eight action fields of the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field (2010 – 2018) Chapter on Health and Well-being in the European Youth Report. 4
Evidence: the EU Youth Report 20% of young people suffer from mental disorders 3 million young people aged 15-34 use cannabis daily These are causes or outcomes of chronic illnesses that can be PREVENTED! In 2006, 7341 young people died by suicide 17 % of people aged 15-24 are overweight, 9% are underweight 5

Youth in Action Programme Inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities -disability and health issues- is a priority of the programme Inclusion projects get priority over projects of equal quality Coverage of exceptional costs – flexible procedures multi measure agreements mobility, foreign languages, intercultural learning, social skills, personal development What do young people get out of it? Youth pass: recognition of non formal learning
YiA Projects for young people with health issues and disability Groups of young patients from Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Slovakia meet in Hungary to do creative work on identity, culture and their position in society. At the end of the week they perform street theatre about the situation they face and show creative solutions. Youth Exchanges Training and Networking Hungary national patient platform sets up an international partnership building seminar to do exchanges or EVS afterwards. This gives the chance to discuss with youth workers from different countries dealing with young patients, get to know each other and see how to develop projects together.
YiA Projects for young people with health issues and disability Domenico, 30, Italian, physical disability due to asphylaxia at birth EVS volunteer in Malta with NGO Razett tal-Hibberija helping people with disabilities Cleaning the animal park-welcoming visitors-help in therapeutic swimming sessions Eva, 28, Flemish, Usher’s Syndrome (deaf and almost blind) EVS volunteer in Greece in a rehabilitation centre Taking care of disabled children organizing free time activities European Voluntary Service
