Example: • You have $30 to spend at a sporting goods store. You find a pair of running shoes that you want to purchase. The original cost of the shoes is $42, but they are on sale for 30% off. It is tax-free week, so you will not be charged sales tax. Can you purchase the shoes with your gift card?
1) multiply the cost by the discount • 42 x 30% • 2) Change the percent to a decimal • 42 x .30 = $12.60 • 3) Subtract the discount from the original price • $42 – $12.60 = $29.40
Sales Tax • To find sales tax – multiply the price by the sales tax • Change the percent to a decimal • To find the sale price, add the sales tax to the original price.
Example: • You have been saving to buy a skateboard. The skateboard costs $89, and the sales tax is 8%. What is the cost of the skateboard?
1) Multiply the cost by the sales tax • $89 x 8% • 2) Change the percent to a decimal • $89 x .08 =$7.12 • 3) Add the sales tax to the original cost • $89 + $7.12 = $96.12

Example • You have been saving your money to buy a skateboard. The skateboard costs $89, but you have a coupon for 25% off. Sales tax for your area 8%. If you have saved $71 so far, how much more money must you save before you can buy the skateboard?
1) Multiply the cost by the discount • $89 x 25% • 2) Change the percent to a decimal • $89 x .25 = $22.25 • 3) Subtract discount from the original price • $89 - $22.25 = $66.75 • 4) Multiply discounted price by sales tax • $66.75 x 8% • 5) Change percent to a decimal • $66.75 x .08 = $5.34 • 6) Add sales tax to discounted price • $66.75 + $5.34 = $72.09 • $72.09 - $71 = $1.09
