  5. FIRST THINGS FIRST : MAGNETS • All wires carrying current produce a magnetic field. • This field follows the right hand rule

  6. ELECTROMAGNETS By coiling wires in a loop the magnetic field can be concentrated forming an electromagnet S N

  7. A BETTER MAGNET • Electromagnets are useful because: • They have a higher magnetic field than permanent magnets • Can be turned on or off • Their poles can be reversed

  8. A BETTER BETTER MAGNET To get a stronger magnetic force (B), increase the number of turns (n), the current (I) or the permeability of space(µ).

  9. MAKING SPACE MORE PERMABLE Iron, nickel and cobalt are excellent magnetic conductors They can be used to enhance a magnetic field
