My Real World Problem By Kaleb Smith 9-20-10 Algebra 4th Period
Here it is… • Bob wants to have a party. He estimates that you need one family size bag of potato chips to feed ten guests. If one family size bag of potato chips costs $5, how much money would he have to spend to buy chips if up to sixty guests came to the party?
The Equation The equation for my problem is…. Y= 5(x)/10 or f(x)= 5(x)/10 x= the number of guests y= how much it costs to buy enough chips
Independent Variable • My independent variable is my x which is the number of party guests. • My dependent variable is my x which is the cost of the chips. • We know that y depends on x. • So the cost of the chips DEPENDS on the number of guests.
Domain and Range • Domain is the x values, and the Range is the y values. • The Domain for this real world problem is D:{10,20,30,40,50,60} • The Range for this real world problem is R:{5,10,15,20,25,30}
Is it Continuous or Discrete? • Since the data doesn’t have a point in both the negative quadrant and doesn’t go on for an infinite amount positive and negative, it is discrete.
Is it a function? • A function is where there is oneindependent value paired with only one dependent value. • This means that the x values CANNOT repeat. • This problem is a function because the x values don’t repeat.
The answer? • Depending on how many people came to Bob’s party, he would have to guy as little as $5 of chips to up to $30 of chips.
