Key Efforts • Our businesses are the tools we use to create sustainable social impact in our community. We measure this social impact by the numbers. Number of jobs created, number of our students employed, and recidivism rates of our students against a local average.
Role of TSM The role of The Stewards Market is: • To start, develop and manage social enterprises with an emphasis on job creation for the poorest among us. • To prepare individuals for employment at one of our social enterprises through intense training and personal development. • To provide opportunities for marketplace leaders to support our work with time, talent and treasure.
Our Social Enterprises • King LizzyApparel is Chicago based street-wear company specializing in graphic t-shirts, snapback caps and hand painted sneakers. • King Lizzy Recording Studio is an affordable, high quality space where individuals in our community can record. • SOAP is a hotel sustainability service launched in 2011
Our Impact (2006-2012) • 600 Participants trained • 23 New employment positions created • 6 Years of revenue growth • 5Social enterprises (3 launched, 2 Partners)
TSM Academy Overview Description The Stewards Market recognizes that there still remains a significant economic gap throughout our city. There is evidence suggesting that the gap is in fact widening especially within the Chicago’s poorest communities. As of January 2013, The Stewards Market will begin offering an in-depth Work Force Development course for all individuals seeking employment from any of our Social Enterprises. By combining new and well-practiced curriculum we believe participants will have a six-month experience that best prepares them to enter the work force in general and hopefully become productive members of society. • Objectives • Expose students to a wide range of personal and professional development • Equip individuals with skills that will make them productive and marketable members of society. • Provide value to TSM social businesses • Offer competitive internship opportunities • Prepare individuals to earn a livable wage in meaningful work • Invite individuals to maintain fellowship within a strong Christian community
Coursework • Module 1: Personal Development (6 weeks) • Social Fluency, Financial Empowerment, Work Ethic • Module 2: Job Readiness (6 weeks) • General communication development, Bookkeeping with Excel, Digital Skills Development • Module 3: Work Force Development (8 weeks) • The Art of Selling, Intro to Graphic Design, Understanding the Pro Kitchen, Studio Time • Module 4: Getting Started in Social Enterprise (4 weeks) • Job Site experience. Participants spend one week at each of our social enterprises. (King Lizzy Apparel, KL Recording Studio, SOAP, CJK ), Logistics Management • Module 5: Providing value through Internships (6 weeks or more) • Internship Opportunities • Employment • Part time Employment • Full Time Employment
