Wildfires and the water cycle • Hydrocarbon compounds are distilled into their constituent parts. • They move down into the soil, then form a waxy coating that is waterproof. • The ability of forests to absorb and hold water is reduced, not only because soil is a waterproof layer but because vegetation that uses the water has been damaged
