Under Thunder Pathway A Proposal to Spend One Million Dollars On a Project for Juneau
Sheryl Hall Wittig Riverbend Elementary School Extended Learning Teacher March 2006
What it is Who it's for Where it's located When it will be open Why it is important to have this project in Juneau Most difficult part Most interesting thing I learned Mathematical knowledge I gained What I learned about myself by completing the project How I would improve it if I did the project again About my interview This Presentation
What it is • Under Thunder Pathway is a pathway linking a fourth of Juneau's most densely populated neighborhoods with each other, schools, business parks and shopping areas encouraging safe and efficient transportation and recreation.
Who it's for • Students traveling to/from schools • Floyd Dryden Middle School • Riley Sports Complex (football field) • Glacier Valley Elementary School • People traveling to stores and businesses
Where it's located • This project involves improving Under Thunder Pathway from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center to Amalga Street along the base of Thunder Mountain with connections to neighborhood streets. Future plans are to extend and pave this trail all the way to the McNugget Intersection. Trail Mix received $88,800 for this project
When it will be open • Open every day, all year long • Open dawn to dusk
How much will it cost? • Trail Mix has requested $4 million for a 4 mile trail. • One mile of trail would cost $1 million.
Why it is important to have this project in Juneau • One fourth of the city’s population lives to the east of Mendenhall Loop • Much safer than Mendenhall Loop bike paths: • 13 road crossings on east side of Mendenhall Loop • Numerous driveways to cross • Connects with existing bike paths • Encourages exercise • Decreases pollution & traffic • Beautiful nature close to home
