  1. What are Integrated Programs? • Programs that support activities that cut across the research, education, and extension functions of land-grant universities • May integrate at the program level • May integrate at the project level • Or both

  2. Which Programs are Integrated? • Integrated Research, Education and Extension program (Section 406 of AREERA) • Food Safety • Integrated Pest Management • Water Quality • Pest Management Alternatives Program (PMAP)

  3. Which Programs are Integrated? • Integrated Organic Program • Small Business Innovation Research • National Research Initiative (Section 401 of AREERA)

  4. What do the 406 programs request? • Combination of research, education, and extension (at least 2 functions) • Project teams are multi-disciplinary, and come from multiple institutions • Single function proposals funded under very limited conditions.

  5. What does PMAP request? Both single and multiple-function proposals • Proposals that focus on technology research and outreach • Develop and introduce new technologies • Modify existing approaches • Proposals that focus on outreach • Field demonstration

  6. What Does IOP Request? • Multi-functional: Projects emphasize research and Extension and higher education. • Multi-disciplinary • Multi-state or multi-institutional

  7. The IFAFS Model • Stakeholder advisory group that is consulted prior to development of project objectives • A measurable, outcome oriented plan for dissemination of information developed by project during the life of the project • Stakeholders involved in project evaluation • Progress reports that demonstrate impacts

  8. What does SBIR Request? • Research for the development of a profit-making technology, product or service • Technology transfer • $80,000 feasibility phase/$300,000 development phase • Small Businesses of 500 employees or less

University Involvement in SBIR • Strongly encouraged • University faculty may serve as consultants or receive a subcontract (both limited to no more than 1/3 of Phase I award or 1/2 of Phase II award) and continue to work full time at university • University faculty may serve as principal investigator on the grant, by reducing university employment to 49% for duration of grant and if the SBIR research is performed someplace other than their research lab • It is usually not acceptable for university faculty to serve as consultants and have all the research done in their lab
