Choosing Change Do you have a common vision of how you would like your Big Two to function at your school? Do you know which skills the teachers and staff in your building possess? Do you know which skills will be necessary to reach your vision for each of the Big Two? Have you identified the benefits of implementing ELT at your school? (attract students, impact enrollment, etc) What resources does your school already have to start making change? (parent involvement, effective teachers, large classrooms, etc)
Deciding to Redesign Your School Day/Year DISCUSS and DECIDE if a planning process to redesign our 2013-14 school day would benefit our school and students. YES- Expanding the school day for core academics, enrichment and individualized interventions would greatly benefit our students. During 2012-13, we want to continue our thinking, learning, and planning to design a stronger, better school day. NO- adding more time to the school day for core academics, enrichment, and interventions will not benefit our students. We have learned a lot but are not ready to redesign or expand our school day to boost student achievement.

Communicating our Decisions • Create key messages that communicate “What we’ve learned and want to do for 2012-13” • How you will use a school-wide focus to drive implementation of your BIG TWO HQELT best practices • Create key messages that communicate “We want to start the planning process for 2013-14” • Either “Yes” we want to explore and plan further how to redesign our day and why; or “No” we learned a lot but this is not the right time for us to redesign You will develop messages for both decisions using the same process and ideas.

Key Messages The Benefits of Expanded Learning Time
Key Message #1 Example • We are working to build a better stronger school day. Expanded Learning is about preparing our students for life in the 21st century. To be successful our students must become excellent readers, writers, thinkers, problem solvers and public speakers. Expanded Learning is an effort to ensure the success of each and every one of our students by strengthening and expanding opportunities for learning.
Key Message #2 Example • This is an Exploratory Process. No decisions have been made yet. Our school is working to identify opportunities to strengthen instruction and expand learning at our school. This may involve adding time to our day or year, but we have not made any decisions yet.
Key Message #3 Example • Maintain an open mind. Thinking about changing the school day is a very emotional topic. Some people may have strong feelings for and against an expanded school day, but we are just at the beginning of exploring and understanding the options. Please reserve judgment until we have time to talk in depth and review information together.
Key Message #4 Example • We are planning how to prioritize our time next year to use data to identify our priorities and goals, focus on the goals and monitor progress toward our goals.
