What are environmental rights? “The right to a healthy environment” is the simple yet powerful idea that everyone should have the right to breathe fresh air and drink clean water.
What canenvironmental rights do? • Provide a stimulus for stronger environmental laws • Protect environmental laws from rollbacks by future governments • Promote democracy through greater citizen participation in decisions and actions to protect the environment • Ensure that the environment is on a level playing field with social and economic rights in decision making • Protect environmental rights of all Canadians, including vulnerable populations

A Federal Environmental Bill of Rights would: • strengthen Canada’s legal framework for protecting the environment • recognize that all people have a right to a healthy environment • improve public participation in environmental decision making, access to information, and access to the courts
