  9. What are the social limits on the media? • Limits of influence: • Very few voters are well-informed on issues • Selective attention • Primetime shows are entertainment, not information • “Skimming” the news • Social media influence

How does the media impact electoral politics? • The media determines The Public Agenda- what is considered important by the public • Political candidates rely more on the media, and less on their party, to spread their message and image • The media uses ad techniques- spin, sound bites, and negative advertising- to influence the pubic • Most popular forms of media are biased along one side of the political spectrum • i.e. Fox News, MSNBC
