  1. A global approach for Introducing air/ground data communications at ATC ATN99 conference René Esser - European ATS data link programme manager

  2. Content • Who is Airsys ATM ? • The data link technologies • The recognised ones • The data link accommodation approach • Integrating ATS data link at an ATC site

  3. Airsys ATM

  4. Complete portfolio, harnessing the modern ATM technologies ATC centres (en-route and approach) Airport Communications Navaids Surveillance Airsys ATM ’s complete range of products

  5. Airsys ATM & Thomfans • Thomfans, a dedicated FANS (real CNS/ATM) entity, combining the strengths of : • Thomson-CSF • Airsys ATM : Ground ATM systems • Comsys : Communication networks • Sextant Avionique : Avionics • Alcatel Space Industries : Satellites • Facing the market evolution in CNS/ATM & CDM: local, regional, and worldwide

  6. Communication Enhanced thru: Satellite Links Surveillance Radio VHF routine communication navigational data ATN FANS1/A Airsys ATM ADS/CPDLC references Paris Iran FMS EOLIA2 - CAUTRA Uzbekistan ADS Egypt Myanmar Laos CPDLC Sri Lanka Singapore Fiji ATS Tahiti Mauritius islands TAAATS RSA INCA

  7. Content • Who is Airsys ATM ? • The data link technologies • The recognised ones • The data link accommodation approach • Integrating ATS data link at an ATC site

  8. Communication Satellites (Inmarsat) VDR Mode S Ext.sq. VDL M4 STDMA VDR Mode S Satcom Satcom National networks ATN The scope of data link techniques Private networks ACARS Network

  9. Airsys ATM’s air/ground data link approach • The key to success is air/ground cooperation : • At standardisation level : ICAO ATNP, EUROCONTROL ODIAC OR and Design Teams, RTCA/EUROCAE WG53, etc. • At development and validation level, thru air/ground integration programmes • Collaboration with End users, Aircraft manufacturers, Avionics suppliers & communication service providers • Example : EOLIA / ProATN : • Cooperative demo at Le Bourget, June 1999

  10. Validation of the products is done by different steps : System development and unitary testing Factory integration with the realistic tools : aircraft simulating tools, communication networks, radars Integration with “adjacent” sites : ATC site & Simulator Aircraft ATC site vs. Simulator aircraft / real aircraft FANS1/A, EOLIA-ProATN, DADI (Mode S) For the ATN products, a special test bed is being created by the CAERAF project, to test air and ground Routers and End Systems Validation approach

  12. Data link introduction -The difficulty -> opportunity -> strategy • ATC is faced with different a/g data communication means : FANS, ATN, STDMA, Mode S specific services • Different in functionality, integrity, performance, … some of them are already existing, whereas others may be complementary --> Opportunity • The (co-)existence of different air/ground networks cannot be neglected. Therefore, the integrated data link server has been embedded in Airsys ATM’s strategy. This strategy builds on the FANS1/A - ATN Dual Stack approach

  14. The data link server benefits • Minimises impact of data link introduction in ATC system, as the server takes care of part of the End User Application functionality, e.g. • managing the necessary Logon procedures • controlling the outstanding messages • acting as Aircraft Information Server for the ATC site • Optimises the air/ground data link medium to be used, taking advantage of the equipage of the aircraft • It offers a transparent interface. Any type of air/ground data communication means can be supported, whilst kept to the maximum extent transparent to the controller / ATC system • It can be connected to any type of ATC system

  20. Conclusions • Airsys ATM sees data link as a prime feature for new ATC/ATM systems. Hence its high involvement in R&D, Validation and Exploitation • The existence of different technologies cannot be ignored, … moreover one should take advantage of this • The integrated data link server enables a right introduction and seamless usage of multiple data links
