  1. ALL AGE WORSHIP MYTH OR REALITY?

  2. WHAT DID JESUS DO? When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the side of a mountain… …and told the under 3s to sit under that tree over there and to try to avoid falling on any rocks… …the 4-11 year olds to go and sit on that patch of grass out of the way and colour in some pictures… ….and the teenagers to stop yawning and moaning about the early start and the lack of cup cakes… OH NO HE DIDN’T!

  3. IT IS... A rare time in church to include all three learning styles. Spend some time working out your preferred style,

  4. IT SHOULDN’T BE... A SMORGASBORD EMBARRASSING A SHOW INCOMPREHENSIBLE BORING EASY!

  5. WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?

  6. OVER TO YOU! • Work in small groups. • Make a list of the things which should be included in All Age Worship, and a list of those things which you would prefer not to have included. Make sure you think about prayers, teaching, singing, liturgy… • Do you think older/younger members of your church would agree with you list?

  7. WHAT HELPS IN TEACHING? • Large visual aids • Short chunks of teaching • Real life application • Conversation rather than preaching • Jokes/humour • Something to do • Not too long

  8. WHAT HELPS IN SUNG WORSHIP • Easy to sing tunes • Not pitched too high • Understandable words – minimal metaphor/imagery • A repeated line/chorus • A chance to use movement if desired. • Not too long (joined songs)

  9. WHAT HELPS IN PRAYERS? • Multi-sensory • Include movement IF DESIRED! • Focus on one type – eg pray for world OR for sick OR for myself • Teaching some traditional prayers over time • Not too long

  10. WHAT HELPS IN LITURGY? • Predictable shape to service • Space and time to respond • Teaching some traditional prayers over time • Quieter and louder times • Not too long – total around 45mins

  11. ATTENTION SPAN

  12. HOW LONG? Focused Attention 8 SECONDS Sustained Attention OVER LAST 10 YEARS FROM AROUND 12 MINUTES TO AROUND 5 MINUTES

  13. CHANGE THE INPUT EVERY 5 MINUTES!

  14. HOW TO PLAN... • PRAY • WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW BY THE END OF THE SERVICE? • WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO DO AS THEY GO BACK INTO THE WORLD?

  15. HAVE A LOOK AT THE PLANNING SHEETDISCUSS IT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS.IS THIS SOMETHING YOU COULD USE?YOU ARE WELCOME TO ADJUST IT FOR YOUR CHURCH”

  16. PLANNING A SERVICE • THE GATHERING • THE TEACHING • THE RESPONSE • THE SENDING OUT

  17. THE GATHERING • First impressions count! Research suggests that visitors might make up their mind about a church within two minutes. • Welcome and engage – understand where they are as they arrive and encourage them to enter fellowship and worship. • Is this really the right place for the notices?

  18. THE TEACHING • How will you present the message? • STORY, VIDEO, DRAMA, PUPPETS etc. • Remember ALL AGE • Remember VAK

  19. THE RESPONSE • What time and space is there for all ages to respond? • Music, prayers, objects, writing, drawing…

  20. THE SENDING OUT • How will you help people to go and do likewise? • Songs, actions, processions, acts of commitment

  21. BIBLE VERSIONS Online http://www.biblegateway.com App YouVersion LOOK AT VERSES 13-16 WHICH IS CLEARER?

  22. CHILDREN AND COMMUNION • Our church has the Bishop’s Permission to admit baptised children to Holy Communion before confirmation. • A short course to prepare them is needed • Then they can be officially received into Communion.
